Unfortunately, modeling this trend is a challenging task in the presence of noise, as the measurements can become irreproducible and misleading, thus resulting in strong deviations from the actual behavior. While noise impacts the application runtime, it has little to no effect on some hardware counters like floating-point operations. However, selecting the appropriate counters for performance modeling demands some investigation. In this paper, we perform a noise analysis on various hardware counters. Using our noise generator, we add additional noise on top of the system noise to inspect the counters' variability. We perform the analysis on five systems with three applications in the presence of various noise patterns and categorize the counters across the systems according to their noise resilience. 001003814 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-5112$$a5112 - Cross-Domain Algorithms, Tools, Methods Labs (ATMLs) and Research Groups (POF4-511)$$cPOF4-511$$fPOF IV$$x0 001003814 536__ $$0G:(GEPRIS)449683531$$aDFG project G:(GEPRIS)449683531 - ExtraNoise – Leistungsanalyse von HPC-Anwendungen in verrauschten Umgebungen (449683531)$$c449683531$$x1 001003814 536__ $$0G:(DE-Juel-1)ATMLPP$$aATMLPP - ATML Parallel Performance (ATMLPP)$$cATMLPP$$x2 001003814 588__ $$aDataset connected to CrossRef Conference 001003814 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aTarraf, Ahmad$$b1$$eCorresponding author 001003814 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aGeiß, Alexander$$b2 001003814 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)188664$$aDaoud, Nour$$b3 001003814 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)132199$$aMohr, Bernd$$b4$$eCorresponding author 001003814 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aWolf, Felix$$b5 001003814 773__ $$a10.1109/ProTools56701.2022.00007 001003814 8564_ $$uhttps://juser.fz-juelich.de/record/1003814/files/HW_accepted.pdf$$yOpenAccess 001003814 909CO $$ooai:juser.fz-juelich.de:1003814$$pdnbdelivery$$pdriver$$pVDB$$popenaire$$popen_access 001003814 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)5008462-8$$6P:(DE-Juel1)188664$$aForschungszentrum Jülich$$b3$$kFZJ 001003814 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)5008462-8$$6P:(DE-Juel1)132199$$aForschungszentrum Jülich$$b4$$kFZJ 001003814 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-511$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF4-510$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF4-500$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF4$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$9G:(DE-HGF)POF4-5112$$aDE-HGF$$bKey Technologies$$lEngineering Digital Futures – Supercomputing, Data Management and Information Security for Knowledge and Action$$vEnabling Computational- & Data-Intensive Science and Engineering$$x0 001003814 9141_ $$y2022 001003814 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0510$$2StatID$$aOpenAccess 001003814 920__ $$lyes 001003814 9201_ $$0I:(DE-Juel1)JSC-20090406$$kJSC$$lJülich Supercomputing Center$$x0 001003814 980__ $$acontrib 001003814 980__ $$aVDB 001003814 980__ $$acontb 001003814 980__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)JSC-20090406 001003814 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED 001003814 9801_ $$aFullTexts
