Measuring Local pH Gradients and Ion Concentration Profiles using in operando 13C and 23Na MRI

Abstract: This study investigates the local reaction conditions in proximity of a copper electrode during CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce e-fuels or base chemicals. The selectivity of the CO2RR towards desired products is still a challenge due to the complex interactions of local conditions in electrode proximity, such as pH value as well as CO2 and ion concentrations. We extend our method for pH determination using in operando 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques to spatially resolve local pH meas-urements.
