AB - The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) has gained tremendous attention in the past years as a possible route to produce valuable chemicals and replacing fossil fuels. In order to steer the selectivity of the final products, a proper catalytic material should be chosen and the electrochemical conditions such as electrolyte’s buffer capacity and local pH should be controlled 1-3. Furthermore, the photocatalytic materials can convert the solar energy to the chemical fuels through CO2RR and water splitting. Therefore, the understanding of processes at the micro- and nanometer scale during electrochemical reaction at the catalysts is of utmost importance and key to improve the reaction efficiency. It has been shown by M. Koper’s group that Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) can contribute to understanding the shift of local pH during CO2RR 1, 4. Referring it, we present a SECM study of the interface between different materials to investigate the local selectivity. In addition to it, taking BiVO4 5, as an example of photo-catalysts, we investigate the density of states using Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) depending on the preparation method of BiVO4 films, which gives us a hint for the critical factors related to the efficiency such as defects and dominant phases.
