Abstract: A novel limb sounder for the measurement of temperature at the mesosphere and lower thermosphere boundary is presented. The instrument is designed to fly on Micro- and Nanosatelliteplatforms for the deployment in satellite constellations. The goal is to obtain a dense, 4-dimensional mesh of temperatures for resolving the small scale, time-varying waves that coupleatmospheric regions. The instrument’s core element is a spatial heterodyne interferometer, which is a monolithicMichelson-type interferometer, particularly suitable for harsh environments. The instrumentsuccessfully completed a student-led rocket mission and an in-orbit satellite technology demonstration. Upcoming deployments are within an international satellite program in research andeducation and an in-orbit demonstration and validation mission of the European Union. Thesemissions will improve the maturity of the measurement concept based on extensive in-orbitcharacterizations.A focus of this presentation is on a two-satellite mission concept to obtain highly resolvedgravity wave momentum fluxes, one of the key quantities to understand the coupling betweenthe Earth atmosphere and lower space. This is relevant to our capabilities for near real-timespace weather prediction and to improving space environment climatology.
