AB - The molten core-concrete interaction in the ex-vessel phase of a severe accident in a light water reactor is the source of significant amounts of carbon monoxide among other gaseous products. The European project AMHYCO addresses open issues related to the understanding of the impact of carbon monoxide on phenomena occurring in the late accident phase. One of these topics is related to the impact on the operational behavior of passive auto-catalytic recombiners (PARs). An experimental program alongside model development activities aims to improve the predictive capabilities of numerical models in order to assess the efficiency of PARs as hydrogen mitigation measure.Experiments in the REKO-3 facility are being performed to study the impact of carbon monoxide on both platinum-based and palladium-based catalysts. Catalyst sheets are exposed to steady-state flows of gaseous mixtures including hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, steam and carbon monoxide inside a vertical flow reactor. The boundary conditions are selected according to numerical pre-studies in order to cover relevant ranges of gaseous mixtures. Specific focus lies on mixtures with low amounts of oxygen. Measurements of the catalyst temperature and the outlet gas concentrations enable to assess the catalyst activity and efficiency. The conference paper gives a comprehensive overview of the work performed, introduces the experimental facility, and highlights relevant results.KEYWORDSSevere Accident, Hydrogen Mitigation, Passive Auto catalytic Recombiners, Carbon Monoxide
