520 | _ | _ | |a In particle accelerators and storage rings, electromagnets are used to contain the particle beam. While dipole magnets bend the trajectory, quadrupole magnets focus the beam towards nominal orbit. With multiple quadrupoles used, a coherent oscillation occurs, and the number of oscillations per revolution inside the ring is called betatron tune.To better understand electric dipole moments, the JEDI-Collaboration (Jülich Electric Dipole moment Investigations) in Jülich needs an accurate understanding of its storage ring COSY (COoler SYnchrotron). The model used in the simulation software Bmad and found a discrepancy between betatron tune measurements and computed betatron tune. The primary suspect for this discrepancy is a mismodelling of quadrupole magnets, especially magnetic length shortening due to surrounding ferromagnetic material. Tune measurements with different quadrupole currents applied are compared to model tunes to determine actual quadrupole strengths. |
