Abstract: The magnetic properties of Fe3−δO4 nanoparticles for medical applications dependon the synthesis route influencing their defect structure, ligand shelland shape [1]. Optimisation of the magnetisation requires disentanglingpreparation-specific influences from intrinsic size effects. Fe3−δO4 nanoislandson SrTiO3 are introduced as a ligand-free model system with defined structureand orientation to study the magnetic properties of iron oxide nanostructures.Characterisation by diffraction, grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering, neutron reflectivity and SQUID indicates the formation of crystalline, uniformlyshaped nanoislands with a distinct magnetic shape anisotropy [2]. Our resultsform the basis for ongiong in situ studies probing interdependencies betweencomposition, shape, defect structure and magnetisation of nanostructured ironoxides.[1] D.
