520 _ _ |a The movement and decision-making of pedestrians are influenced by a complex interplay of internal and external factors, such as individual behavior, social interactions, and the built environment. In the context of civil engineering and traffic, understanding these factors is crucial for optimizing the design of buildings and transport infrastructures to promote safe and efficient pedestrian flow. In open spaces and crowds, these factors can shape the dynamics of pedestrian movement in ways thatare not fully understood, so far. This work presents a summary of the efforts made to uncover the underlying structures and laws that govern pedestrian dynamics, with a focus on how pedestrians interact with their environment. Through a combination of simulation experiments, literature review, and case studies, several models for pedestrian dynamics are presented, along with the ideas that motivated their development and enhancement. It is shown that the geometrical representation of pedestrians not only affects the realism of the simulations but also shapes the nature of the model itself. With a focus on practical application of simulations in real-world scenarios, the importance of automatic methods for validation and verification of models is emphasized. Assessing the goodness of simulation results and the potential for reliable prediction helps to highlight the usefulness of developed models and methods for addressing safety-relevant questions in pedestrian dynamics. This work is particularly relevant to civil engineers, transport engineers, architects and other professionals involved in the design and management of multi-functional buildings and crowd events. It covers the process of applying models to real-world situations and using the results to inform furthertheoretical development. I hope that these findings and suggestions for future research will be of value to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working in the field of pedestrian dynamics.
