001027705 520__ $$aZiel/Aim One of the core components of emotional processing is the processingof emotional valence which has been studied thoroughly using fMRI. Morerecently, in order to elucidate the relationship to neurotransmitters, GABA levelswere measured using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Sofar only few studies addressed the relationship of GABAA-receptor availabilitywith fMRI BOLD signal. In this study we investigated for the first time this relationshipduring different types of emotional valence processing. We hypothesiseda correlation between the BOLD signal and the binding potential of aGABAA receptor ligand in the medial prefrontal cortex.Methodik/Methods We performed a combined fMRI and [11C]flumazenil-PETstudy in 16 healthy subjects with emotional and neutral stimuli from the InternationalAffective Picture System (IAPS). Our task comprised two types of emotionalprocessing: passive viewing of emotional stimuli and cognitive appraisalof these stimuli. After applying a bolus infusion protocol, PET and fMRI datawere simultaneously acquired using a hybrid 3T MR-BrainPET.Ergebnisse/Results We found a differential correlation of the BOLD signal with[11C]flumazenil binding potential in the paracingulate gyrus and the frontalmedial cortex. The [11C]flumazenil binding potential in the paracingulate gyruscorrelated with the BOLD signal induced by picture processing and pictureappraisal. In contrast, the [11C]flumazenil binding potential in the frontal medialcortex correlated with passive viewing of negatively and positively valencedpictures.Schlussfolgerungen/Conclusions Our data provide the first evidence for adifferential correlation of the BOLD signal and the [11C]flumazenil binding potentialfor active appraisal (paracingulate gyrus) and passive viewing (frontalmedial cortex) of emotional stimuli.
