AB - Even though the panorama for the use of remotely sensed SIF for vegetation monitoring is promising, it is still in the research and development stage, where efforts are being focused on topics like: (1) the downscaling of the SIF signal to the leaf level, as well as (2) the spatial downscale (increase in the spatial resolution), and (3) the understanding of the SIF response to different (e.g., water) stress conditions, and (4) the relation of the signal with the GPP. In addition, another field of active research is (5) the development of new sensors (especially at UAV and satellite scales). Thus, the progress on the remote sensing of SIF research towards advancing the understanding of the signal and its link with physiological processes, will determine the delivery of operational SIF-based tools to support sectors like agriculture and forestry in the future.
