Within the last years, agroecology has received attention providing a holistic approach to a sustainable and resilient agriculture with the goal to put ecological processes at the centre by considering the agroecology as transdisciplinary concept that comprises ecological, social and economic dimensions of the agri-food systems. Within the approach of agroecology as a combination of scientific disciplines, an applied management practice, and a social movement we explore the potential role and contribution of plant phenotyping as a tool contributing to the advancement in breeding agricultural management practices and as such are essential for agroecological transition.
