Methanol from Air - The Technical Aspects of DryHy Project (SOEC)

2024

DryHy Stakeholder Workshop, AbidjanAbidjan, Ivory Coast, 12 Nov 2024 - 13 Nov 20242024-11-122024-11-13

Abstract: The production of cost-effective green methanol requires the availability of renewable resources, negative carbon dioxide feedstock and hydrogen sources like water. However, areas rich in renewable energy like solar are arid regions like North and West Africa and are commonly short in freshwater supply. Therefore, it is important to produce green methanol in a way to avoid competition with freshwater. By combining direct air capture (which extracts water and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere) with solid oxide electrolyzer powered by renewable energy, syngas a necessary component for methanol synthesis can be produced. This stakeholder workshop presentation highlights the operational challenges of operating solid oxide electrolyzer such as improving carbon dioxide utilization, minimizing carbon formation, as well impact of variable feed composition from the direct air capture on the solid oxide electrolyzer performance and subsequently methanol synthesis.
