Abstract: To build high speed magnetic bearings using sintered NdFeB magnets, it is necessary to assemble bandages with suitable interference by press-fitting. Here we investigate the joining process between titanium grade 5 bandages and sintered NdFeB magnets using finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental measurements with different coefficient of friction. The coefficient of friction, µ, is determined by measured and simulated force-displacement curves. Simulations show that the coefficient of friction between the parts to be joined strongly influences the residual stress in the magnet rings and subsequently the permissible speed of the magnetic bearings.
