| 520 | _ | _ | |a High-Current Accelerator-driven Neutron Sources (HiCANS) are a promising new type of neutron source with the potential to serve as national neutron sources, providing an alternative to research reactors. Several countries are currently developing HiCANS facilities, including Germany's High Brilliance neutron Source (HBS), which has been described in a Technical Design Report. As part of the preparation for its construction, a prototype of the HBS is planned to be built on the campus of the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) in Jülich, Germany, within the next decade. The prototype will be equipped with five instruments: a SANS instrument, a reflectometer, an imaging instrument, a PGNAA instrument, and a diffractometer. The diffractometer is being designed in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University and will function as a flexible time-of-flight instrument suitable for various neutron diffraction applications. The applications of the diffractometer will include powder diffraction, single crystal diffraction, and engineering diffraction. Its design will be developed through an iterative simulation process to optimize the final layout for all the above setups. This versatility is facilitated by different source frequencies and duty cycles, variable collimation, and movable detector elements. High resolution will be achieved through pulse shaping using a dedicated chopper system. With a compact length of only 25 meters, it will offer a large bandwidth. Furthermore, technical implementation of the developments is coming into focus as well. The simulation and iterative optimization of a flexible, multi-purpose diffractometer will allow to tailor dedicated diffraction instruments utilizing the particular strengths of the HBS source and potential future extensions. The high degree of flexibility also considers the needs of different user groups and science cases. Now is the time to initiate these developments. For this, the involved groups are building on the experience gained from previous cooperation projects. |
