Abstract: The objective of this work was to study the group behaviour of motile bacteria by experimenting with 3D printed granular particles whose shape resembled the bacterium of interest. The printed particles were solid sinusoidals. Three batches of particles were printed. Each batch had a different phase for the sinusoidal wave and this affected its properties. The particles were put on a circular plate of diameter 89.7 mm. The plate was attached to an EM shaker which provided sinusoidal signals of different amplitudes and a fixed frequency (20 Hz) in order to move the particles. Nematic ordering and large crystal formation is observed in one batch of particles. Large crystal formation is a probabilistic process and isn't replicable in each run of the experiments. The number fluctuations in the particles are inversely proportional to the number of particles which is different from the result one would expect from an equilibrium statistical mechanics point of view.
