520 _ _ |a The most effective way to build structure is by using rod-like building blocks, for which I will show three examples in this talk. Already simple dispersions of rod-like viruses display a strong shear thinning behavior, so they have a very high viscosity at rest, but a very low viscosity when sheared. We can understand this very non-linear behavior from fist principles, combining small angle neutron scattering with rheology and Smoluchowski theory. The same viruses are excellent agents to induce aggregation between big particles, albeit plastic beads or red blood cells. The forces can be so strong that two red blood cells are (reversibly) deformed to one sphere. Finally, I will show how a well-chosen rheological protocol can be employed to create macroscopically aligned collagen, the other bio-rod of this talk, with a much increased stiffness of the matrix and activity induced extra alignment by embedded SHSY5Y cells, does opening the road to targeted (brain)tissue growth.
