001048582 520__ $$aThe pulp and paper industry (PPI) is an integral part of the bioeconomy, achieving remarkable recycling rates and implementing circular value chains, especially across wide parts of Europe. However, the sector’s circular characteristics have not automatically led to increased sustainability across all sustainability dimensions. Substantial challenges remain, including high energy and water demand in production processes, and significant land and water use for fiber production. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) thus requires far-reaching interventions.For the sector to become future-proof, major adaptations are currently explored and initiated in multiple areas, e.g., through the introduction of alternative fibers and new production processes driven by technological innovations. These will lead to system changes on various levels, the effects of which on the overall system are unclear. Understanding these effects is vital in order to facilitate progress towards the SDGs. Using the German PPI as a best-practice case study, the FiberSysTain project builds its analytical approach on a holistic monitoring framework to understand the dynamics triggered by simultaneous changes at multiple junctures. Subsequently, the dynamics of the PPI will be translated into a system dynamics model, which will then allow for the prospective analysis of sustainability impacts.Results will provide stakeholders and decision-makers with actionable insights and recommendations to support long-term planning and policy development. From a scientific perspective, the project will enhance system knowledge at a level applicable to other bioeconomy sectors. Societally, it will provide crucial information for identifying and preventing undesirable developments at an early stage. From an economic perspective, the findings will support strategy development aimed at strengthening the sector’s resilience and understanding the potential impacts of technological innovations.
