%X Base4NFDI (Basic Services for the National Research Data Infrastructure) is a central, cross-cutting project within the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). Its mission is to develop, coordinate, and provide fundamental, community-driven basic services that can be shared, reused, and continuously improved across all NFDI consortia and beyond. By building and maintaining common infrastructures, standards, and interfaces, Base4NFDI aims to foster a sustainable, interoperable, and open research data ecosystem in Germany. Acting as a coordinating hub, it connects disciplinary and institutional efforts, thereby enhancing coherence, efficiency, and innovation in research data management nationwide.Through its activities, Base4NFDI provides targeted funding for the development and operation of basic services that enable the practical implementation of the FAIR principles, ensuring that research data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Among these funded basic services are:• IAM4NFDI, an identity and access management system that provides secure and consistent access to research data and services across consortia,• PID4NFDI, a persistent identifier service that ensures research data can be uniquely referenced, reliably cited, and remain discoverable over the long term,• Jupyter4NFDI, an interactive platform that allows researchers to access, analyze, and share data in a FAIR-compliant manner, supporting reproducible and transparent research workflows.By funding these basic services, Base4NFDI establishes the necessary technical, organizational, and legal frameworks to make research data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. At the same time, these services provide a sustainable infrastructure that extends beyond individual consortia and strengthens collaboration across the broader research landscape. Moreover, Base4NFDI applies the FAIR principles to its own development processes and outputs. All basic services are transparently documented, openly accessible, and co-designed with the research community. By using open standards, interoperable interfaces, and open-source technologies, Base4NFDI ensures that its services can be integrated across disciplines and institutions. In doing so, Base4NFDI plays a crucial role in linking research communities, overcoming data silos, and establishing sustainable, FAIR-aligned research data practices throughout Germany. By pooling expertise, infrastructure, and governance, it lays the groundwork for researchers in all domains to manage, share, and reuse their data according to the FAIR principles—paving the way for a more open, transparent, and collaborative scientific ecosystem.
