%X This dataset contains cytoarchitectonic maps of four areas of the mesial piriform region in the BigBrain dataset. The maps are based on reference delineations in serial histological sections of the BigBrain at 1 micron resolution in-plane, with a distance of sections typically not lower than 300 micrometers. The 3D cytoarchitectonic maps were created in two different approaches: (1) As first version, a 3D map of the area was created by interpolation of the respective reference delineations. (2) As a more advanced version, a 3D map was created using deep convolutional neural networks trained on the respective reference delineations. As a result, the latter version also includes delineations of the area in the sections in-between reference delineations. The 3D maps were transformed to the 3D reconstructed BigBrain space and are integrated into the Julich-Brain Cytoarchitectonic Atlas.Version specificationThis is an updated version of this dataset with an ultrahigh resolution cytoarchitectonic map of the mesial piriform region, based on the reference delineations of Area piriformis temporobasalis dorsalis (PirTBd), Area piriformis temporobasalis ventralis (PirTBv), Area piriformis temporalis (Uncus) (PirTu) and Area piriformis temporalis (Incisura temporalis) (PirTit) which were created in the BigBrain dataset in 57 sections in the right hemisphere, and in 42 sections in the left hemisphere. For this particular study, the distance between sections varied from 60 to 360 microns to grasp peculiarity of the (pe-ri)allocortical structures. The section number of the most caudal and most rostral section is 4261 and 4568, respectively, in the left hemisphere, and 4276 and 4697, respectively in the right hemisphere. Due to an error in the data pipeline, volumes in nii.gz format provided in the previous version of this dataset did not contain the correct volume data in all cases. In this updated version, all files contain the correct data for the respective brain area and hemisphere.
