Abstract: Neutrons are an exciting probe for the investigation of solid matter complementary to light, X-rays or electrons due to their weak interaction with the electrons and the strong interaction with the nuclei of matter. Still, it is large effort to deliver a sufficient amount of useful neutrons. During the decades from the discovery of the neutron until today, a lot of knowledge about the design of neutron research facilities has been accumulated. In my talk, I would like to address the neutron "production", moderation to suitable energies / wavelengths, neutron transport, and detection. In addition, I will show a few examples of the neutron interaction with matter and thescientific use of neutrons.
