Abstract: Syngas is an important intermediate with a wide range of applications. Recent efforts at Forschungszentrum Jülich focus on the electrolytic production of syngas from water and carbon dioxide through high-temperature solid oxide cell electrolysis cells (SOEC) for use in methanol synthesis in the context of the DryHy project. This presentation discusses finding from an article “Exploring Tradeoffs in Syngas Production with Solid-Oxide Electrolysis via Multi-Objective Optimization” currently under review. An ASPEN Plus model is developed to investigate tradeoffs between competing objectives in SOEC-based syngas production. Two system configurations were examined: low utilization and high utilization designs. Four key performance metrics were evaluated: energy efficiency, stoichiometric number (SN), carbon oxide ratio, and inlet H₂O/CO₂ ratio.By comparing both designs, the high utilization design outperforms the low utilization design and a significant difference in the inlet H₂O/CO₂ ratio required for the same stoichiometry number exist.
