Abstract: White Paper (working paper) describing the setup and goals of the CC-FLUX Zeppelin flight campaign happening in August 2026 in Germany. Urban and forested landscapes are undergoing rapid and profound chemical transitions driven by changes in emissions, climate, land use, and policy. In cities, regulations have dramatically reduced traffic emissions, while emissions from volatile chemical products (VCPs) now constitute a dominant and highly reactive fraction of the urban VOC mixture. In forests, heat waves, drought, and herbivory alter both the quantity and chemical composition of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions. Together, these evolving sources shape atmospheric oxidation chemistry, secondary pollutant formation, and regional climate feedbacks.Yet despite their importance, direct airborne flux measurements of VOCs – the only way to quantify true surface–atmosphere exchange at landscape scale – remain exceedingly rare. The CC-FLUX campaign directly addresses this gap by deploying the Zeppelin NT as a slow, low-altitude, highly stable airborne research platform for eddy covariance VOC flux measurements across both urban and forest ecosystems. The 2026 Zeppelin campaign is designed specifically to quantify gas-phase VOC fluxes, oxidation capacity, and reactive trace gases, while a future campaign will focus on particle-phase SOA. The goal is to close the reactive carbon budget, understand emission drivers, evaluate inventories, and determine how cities and forests jointly shape atmospheric chemistry under climate stress. This will enable future Zeppelin flights dedicated to understanding downwind evolution of such emissions with a focus on their SOA and ozone formation potential.
