Research Interests of G. Nägele |
My activities comprise theoretical investigations and computer simulations of structure, dynamics, rheology and non-equilibrium phase behavior of colloidal suspensions in bulk phase, at interfaces, in two-dimensional confinements and in external fields. The systems investigated are charge-stabilized, magnetic and neutral colloidal dispersions, and self-organized systems like microemulsions and micellar dispersions. The aim is to understand microstructural, thermodynamic, diffusional and macroscopic transport properties (viscosity, electric conductance etc.) in terms of the properties of its constituents. Curriculum Vitae of G. Nägele |
Gerhard Nägele studied physics and mathematics at the University of Konstanz, where he joined the soft matter group of Prof. R. Klein. He received there the Staatsexamen in physics and mathematics (1982), and the Diploma (1983) and Ph.D. (1987) in physics, working on the theory and computer simulation of charged and neutral colloidal dispersions and micellar systems. For his Ph.D. work, he was awarded the "Byk-Award 1988" of the Herbert-Quandt-Foundation, Altana AG. From 1988 - 1995 he continued to work in Konstanz as a postdoctoral fellow. During 1989-1990, he joined the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, as a research fellow, collaborating with Prof. A.Z. Akcasu on dynamics and spinodal decomposition of polymer solutions and blends. In 1994 he obtained the Habilitation in theoretical physics at the University of Konstanz. From 1995 - 2000, he joined the physics department in Konstanz as a senior scientific teacher (Hochschuldozent). In 1998 he stayed for a period of six months at a research lab of the Daimler-Chrysler company, Friedrichshafen, working on radar simulation and visualization of natural landscapes, and on the electro-hydrodynamic simulation and optimization of high-voltage car spraying tools. In 2001 he joined the soft matter group of Prof. J. Dhont at the solid state laboratory (IFF) of the FZ Jülich as a senior scientific staff member. He spent several extended visits as a research scientist at the Institute for Advanced Study of the Polytechnical University in Mexico City (Prof. M. Medina-Noyola), and at the van't Hoff Laboratory of Colloid Chemistry at the University of Utrecht (Prof. A. Philipse and others). |
