Protein Self-Organization on Membranes

The Soft Matter & Biophysics Theory group of the Institute for Solid State Physics (IFF) has an opening for a POSTDOC or a GRADUATE STUDENT for a research project on "Protein Self-Organization on Membranes".

This project is funded in part by an IBM COMPUTATIONAL LIFE SCIENCES initiative.

Many processes in cell biology are controlled by changes in the properties of the cell membrane. This can be changes in lipid composition, a response of membrane proteins to external conditions, or the adsorption of proteins on a lipid membrane. One of these processes is endo- or exocytosis, in which a small transport vesicle buds off from the plasma membrane. This process is controlled by the adsorption of a patch of clathrin molecules, a three-armed protein which forms a hexagonal network on the lipid membrane.

The aim of the project is the modelling of protein self-assembly, and the investigation of the properties of membrane-protein aggregates. Many properties of these complexes can only be studied with coarse-grained models, in which many details of the molecular structure
are neglected. Such models are very well suited for investigating the interplay of membrane geometry, shape fluctuations, membrane composition and protein properties.

With one theoretical and two experimental soft matter groups, two experimental biophysics and two biology groups, and direct access to the local supercomputer center, the Research Center Juelich provides an excellent scientific environment for this work.

Promotionsstelle
