AB - Powder metallurgy P/M of biomaterials is still a niche market so far, but considerable progress of related manufacturing technologies was achieved within the last decades. P/M technologies like metal injection moulding MIM are promising manufacturing routes if large quantities of complex shaped parts are aspired. In addition, porous implants or porous coatings improving the implant fixation by bone ingrowth are preferentially made by P/M technologies. In this presentation, the most promising P/M routes for manufacturing of biomedical implants are introduced focusing on the application for titanium and titanium alloy powders. Challenges and specific properties of P/M titanium are discussed. The potential of P/M is demonstrated in several case studies.
