A new microphysical instrument, the Cloud Particle Spectrometer with Polarization Detection (CPSPD), has been developed that measures light intensity scattered (in forward and backward directions) by individual cloud particles that pass through a focused laser beam and derives their size and thermodynamic phase (liquid or ice) in the optical diameter range from 2 to 50 μm. The optical equivalent diameter is derived from the light scattered in the forward direction. The change in polarization state of the incident light, caused by interaction with the cloud particle, is determined from the polarized components of the backscattered light. The CPSPD, along with several other cloud microphysical probes, has been flown on the University of North Dakota Citation aircraft in mixed phase clouds. It has also been deployed and operated at the Zugspitze research station studying mountain clouds. The preliminary results show that liquid cloud droplets can be distinguished from ice crystals and that the ice fraction can be estimated; an important parameter for better understanding of cloud processes, particularly that of glaciation. 000155460 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF2-234$$a234 - Composition and Dynamics of the Upper Troposphere and Stratosphere (POF2-234)$$cPOF2-234$$fPOF II$$x0 000155460 588__ $$aDataset connected to CrossRef, juser.fz-juelich.de 000155460 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aNewton, Roy$$b1 000155460 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)129131$$aKrämer, Martina$$b2$$ufzj 000155460 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)129137$$aMeyer, Jessica$$b3 000155460 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aBeyer, Alexander$$b4 000155460 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aWendisch, Manfred$$b5 000155460 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aVochezer, Paul$$b6 000155460 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)2012396-6$$a10.1016/j.atmosres.2013.12.010$$gVol. 142, p. 2 - 14$$p2 - 14$$tAtmospheric research$$v142$$x0169-8095$$y2014 000155460 8564_ $$uhttps://juser.fz-juelich.de/record/155460/files/FZJ-2014-04626.pdf$$yRestricted 000155460 909CO $$ooai:juser.fz-juelich.de:155460$$pVDB:Earth_Environment$$pVDB 000155460 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)5008462-8$$6P:(DE-Juel1)129131$$aForschungszentrum Jülich GmbH$$b2$$kFZJ 000155460 9132_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF3-244$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF3-240$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF3-200$$aDE-HGF$$bMarine, Küsten- und Polare Systeme$$lAtmosphäre und Klima$$vComposition and dynamics of the upper troposphere and middle atmosphere$$x0 000155460 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF2-234$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF2-230$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF2-200$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF2$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$aDE-HGF$$bErde und Umwelt$$lAtmosphäre und Klima$$vComposition and Dynamics of the Upper Troposphere and Stratosphere$$x0 000155460 9141_ $$y2014 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0010$$2StatID$$aJCR/ISI refereed 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0100$$2StatID$$aJCR 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0110$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bScience Citation Index 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0111$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bScience Citation Index Expanded 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0150$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bWeb of Science Core Collection 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0199$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bThomson Reuters Master Journal List 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0200$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bSCOPUS 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0420$$2StatID$$aNationallizenz 000155460 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1020$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bCurrent Contents - Social and Behavioral Sciences 000155460 9201_ $$0I:(DE-Juel1)IEK-7-20101013$$kIEK-7$$lStratosphäre$$x0 000155460 980__ $$ajournal 000155460 980__ $$aVDB 000155460 980__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)IEK-7-20101013 000155460 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED 000155460 981__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)ICE-4-20101013
