%Z The authors are very grateful for fruitful discussions with Michael Memmesheimer, Elmar Friese and Jorg Schwinger. The measurement data has been provided by the VERTIKO campaign consortium, the European Environment Agency and Anton Kaifel from the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research, to which we owe a note of gratitude. Computations have been conducted at Julich Supercomputing Centre, Forschungszentrum Julich. This work has been funded under FKZ 07ATF03 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Achim Strunk is grateful for funding by the European Space Agency through the project PROMOTE.
%X The chemistry transport model system EURAD-IM and its variational data assimilation module are applied to assess air quality conditions during the measurement campaign VERTIKO. The inverse modelling system has been designed to run in a nested setup, assimilating in-situ observations and measurements by remote sensing. The benefits of joint initial value and emission rate optimisation are emphasised, significantly enhancing analysis skill for air quality related constituents including ammonia and benzene.
