Abstract: The KFA Research Centre in Jülich is the largest German National Laboratory. KFA's research is supported by supercomputers (CRAY, IBM, Intel), general purpose systems, and over 1300 workstations and PCs from many different vendors. Research data is an important asset and must be protected without having to rely on the discipline of the individual user. KFa evaluated several products and decided to work with IBM on ADSM before it became a product. The presentation will briefly describe key functions of ADSM. KFA's experience with ADSM in support of over 750 workstations, PCs and large UNIX servers with over 11 million files will be given, including suggestions for best use of the product and information about areas where improvements might be needed. KFA's experience with MVS as the central ADSM server in 1994 and 1995 will be complemented by the most recent results migrating the ADSM server to UNIX platforms (AIX and Solaris) and the use of the IBM 3494 robot with the new 3590 Magstar tapes.
