Abstract: The high complexity of present networks requests a layered network management concept. On the one hand, the functions are generalized with high overall responsibility at the top, while on the other hand, they are specialized with definitive detail responsibility at the base.This report will help to: Identify the key network management functions and requirements needed to keep today's heterogeneous network up and running Discuss functional criteria in a five step plan for choosing a network management product/platform Evaluate in short descriptions and roughly estimate the strength and limitations of standards, products and strategies
