Abstract: A computer model was developed which permits a three-dimensional calculation of mass, charge and heat fluxes in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEM). The mathematical basis of the model is the method of finite volume elements. This computation technique also enables balances to be set up for very complex electrochemical processes. In this way, micromodelling of the complete PEM-unit including the membrane/electrodes assembly, the bipolar plates and the current collectors will be possible in principle. The computational results will be described in a second part of the study.
