We map out the most crucial aspects of our approach by (1) acknowledging that second-person engaged interaction is not the only way to understand others, although we claim that it is ontogenetically prior; (2) claiming that spectatorial paradigms need to be complemented in order to enable a full understanding of social interactions; and (3) restating that our theoretical proposal not only questions the mechanism by which a cognitive process comes into being, but asks whether it is at all meaningful to speak of a mechanism and a cognitive process when it is confined to intra-agent space. We address theoretical criticisms of our approach by pointing out that while a second-person social understanding may not be the only mechanism, alternative approaches cannot hold their ground without resorting to second-person concepts, if not in the expression, certainly in the development of social understanding. In this context, we also address issues of agency and intentionality, theoretical alternatives, and clinical implications of our approach. 000201371 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF2-333$$a333 - Pathophysiological Mechanisms of Neurological and Psychiatric Diseases (POF2-333)$$cPOF2-333$$fPOF II$$x0 000201371 588__ $$aDataset connected to CrossRef, juser.fz-juelich.de 000201371 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aTimmermans, Bert$$b1 000201371 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aReddy, Vasudevi$$b2 000201371 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aCostall, Alan$$b3 000201371 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aBente, Gary$$b4 000201371 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aSchlicht, Tobias$$b5 000201371 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)145756$$aVogeley, Kai$$b6$$ufzj 000201371 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)1481789-5$$a10.1017/S0140525X12002452$$gVol. 36, no. 04, p. 441 - 462$$n04$$p441 - 462$$tBehavioral and brain sciences$$v36$$x1469-1825$$y2013 000201371 909CO $$ooai:juser.fz-juelich.de:201371$$pVDB 000201371 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)5008462-8$$6P:(DE-Juel1)145756$$aForschungszentrum Jülich GmbH$$b6$$kFZJ 000201371 9132_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF3-572$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF3-570$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF3-500$$aDE-HGF$$bKey Technologies$$lDecoding the Human Brain$$v(Dys-)function and Plasticity$$x0 000201371 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF2-333$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF2-330$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF2-300$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF2$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$aDE-HGF$$bGesundheit$$lFunktion und Dysfunktion des Nervensystems$$vPathophysiological Mechanisms of Neurological and Psychiatric Diseases$$x0 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0100$$2StatID$$aJCR 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0110$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bScience Citation Index 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0111$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bScience Citation Index Expanded 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0130$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bSocial Sciences Citation Index 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0150$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bWeb of Science Core Collection 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0199$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bThomson Reuters Master Journal List 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0200$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bSCOPUS 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0300$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bMedline 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1020$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bCurrent Contents - Social and Behavioral Sciences 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1030$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bCurrent Contents - Life Sciences 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1050$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bBIOSIS Previews 000201371 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)9910$$2StatID$$aIF >= 10 000201371 9201_ $$0I:(DE-Juel1)INM-3-20090406$$kINM-3$$lKognitive Neurowissenschaften$$x0 000201371 980__ $$ajournal 000201371 980__ $$aVDB 000201371 980__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)INM-3-20090406 000201371 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED
