680 _ _ |a The European Research Infrastructure IAGOS (In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System, www.iagos.org) implements and operates a high-quality global-scale monitoring system for atmospheric composition by using the existing provisions of the global air transport system. The observation system is based on autonomous instrumentation installed on a fleet of passenger aircraft operated by international airlines. IAGOS is the only research infrastructure of its kind world-wide and will form a key component of the global observation system for atmospheric composition and climate change. IAGOS-D is the German contribution to the European Research Infrastructure IAGOS AISBL. In the duration of the project, up to 20 aircraft will be equipped with instrumentation and operated for demonstrating the feasibility of the infrastructure and implementing the basic operation procedures. Parallel to the installation of instrumentation aboard the passenger aircraft, a comprehensive infrastructure will be established for the handling, maintenance and calibration of instrumentation in accordance with aeronautical rules and requirements. In addition to the implementation of daily observations in the framework of IAGOS-CORE which builds on the successful research programme MOZAIC, the complementary approach of IAGOS-CARIBIC for performing detailed atmospheric observations by means of a fully equipped cargo container flying aboard one long-haul aircraft of Deutsche Lufthansa is continued and further improved.
