000280550 520__ $$aFood and water security are dependent on a sustainable use of phosphorus (P). However a higher agricultural production and an inefficient use of phosphate rock can lead to eutrophication as well as to an increasing price of fertilizers and hence of food. Therefore recycling of P from waste materials is an important approach to develop an efficient and clean fertilizer for many countries with no phosphorus rock deposits, such as in Europe. In the current study, our approach was to evaluate the P fertilizing value of Struvite, a common precipitate recovered from waste water treatments or during anaerobic digestion of manure, and how this effect may differ between three different plant species: Maiz (Zea mays), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and lupine (Lupinus angustifolius). Tomato and maize are considered as major food crops and lupine is considered a good candidate to study nutrient mobilization in the rhizosphere of poor soils due to its capability of symbiotically fixing atmospheric nitrogen, as well as to release phosphate-mobilizing carboxylates.Plants were grown in the greenhouse in acidic sandy soil with P added as either struvite or as superphosphate. Our study shows the same P recovery from struvite and superphosphate with no significant differences between plant species, as well as no significant differences in the biomass production between fertilizers treatment. Therefore the utilization of struvite as P-fertilizer may be considered an important strategy to create nutrient cycles in agriculture and to save nutrient sources. The work was conducted within ManureEcoMine project, funded by the European Community’s Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) 513 under Grant Agreement n° 603744. Attendance to this conference and consequent presentation and discussions of the results obtained are seeing as a contribution to the project deliverables.
