Abstract: Solid state electrolytes lead to intrinsic advantages in terms of safety, electrochemical- and thermal stability. However, the conductivity of lithium ion conducting solids performs poorly compared to current liquid electrolyte solutions. There are two approaches to overcome this shortcoming. On one hand the conductivity of the materials is improved by process tweaking and on the other hand the electrolyte film thickness is reduced dramatically. Especially for small electrical devices such thin film battery systems seem promising. At IEK-1, thin film batteries by PVD magnetron sputtering are fabricated. This technology is highly compatible to complex multicomponent materials and up scalable to industrial processing standards. Our current research is focused on systems with LiCoO2 cathodes and Li3+x PONX electrolyte. The high temperatures required to crystalize some of the desired phases cause diffusion, especially of lithium. ToF-SIMS analysis is applied to monitor the lithium distribution in our sample systems. The understanding of the interface behavior is essential to identify relevant factors for battery performance. The processing and first characterization of our all-solid-state-thin-film battery cells based on LiPON electrolyte is presented.
