It is compared with a triradiate strain of Staurastum gladiosum. 18S rDNA analyses confirm that it is related to the triradiate strain and is described as a variety: S. teliferum var. biradiatum. The strains of the variable species Staurastrum gladiosum and S. teliferum form a cluster and may be identical.
