000031808 520__ $$aIn Light-Water-Reactors a zirconium-steam reaction and additional metal corrosion during heavy accidents with core meltdown can result in massive hydrogen release. According to a safety study conducted by GRS an existing Boiling-Water-Reactors (BWR) and studies an future designs for BWR, this may cause a pressure built-up in the containment. As a consequence depressurisation of the containment atmosphere is required. Experiments were conducted basing an these studies to remove hydrogen from the containment with regard to maintaining its integrity. In a literature study conducted before oxidation of hydrogen with manganese dioxide and separation by means of metal membranes were found as methods with highest potential. Their feasibility in varying accident environments was shown. The oxidation reaction proved to be fast without additional hazards. However, the high amount of oxidant needed is disadventageous. The hydrogen removal by means of metal membranes is slower than in case of the oxidation reaction, but there is no limitation of a fixed amount of hydrogen. Their potential for an application in reactor containments is higher especially if the permeability of the membranes can be augmented. Harmful, however, is the hydrogen pressure difference needed for matter transport.
