abstract = {Background: PAN and its homologues are formed in the
atmosphere from the oxidation of organic compounds in the
presence of NOx. They are toxic and can provide important
information on the origin of enhanced ozone concentrations
                      during so-called smog episodes.Analytics and calibration: A
new compact gas chromatograhic system was developed for the
automatic analysis of PAN and PPN with a time resolution of
less than 10 min and detection limit of 25 ppt.A calibration
system was characterised for PAN and PPN. It is based upon
the photolysis of acetaldehyde (for PAN) and propanal (for
PPN) in the presence of known NO concentrations in a flow
reactor. The reaction yield for PAN is $92+/-3\%,$ with
CH3ONO2 being the main by-product. The yield for PPN, as
derived from the comparison with PAN is slightly higher
(close to $100\%$ within the experimental uncertainties). GC
and calibration system are controlled by a new computer
software, which allows automatic peak integration, recording
of important instrumental parameters, and initiation of
automatic calibrations.Ambient measurements: PAN and PPN
were detected and quantified with the new system in ambient
air during measurements made in August 2000 at Julich. The
ratio between PPN and PAN was 0.1 in good agreement with
                      data from the literature.},
