Here, we employ the concepts of polytropic change of state and polytropic temperature for investigating the problem of scaling potential vorticity. For many applications, it has proven useful to scale P with a dimensionless scale factor to remove its exponential increase with altitude. This scale factor may be derived from the assumption of a polytropic reference atmosphere which includes the classical scaling using isothermal reference atmospheres as a special case. 000035954 536__ $$0G:(DE-Juel1)FUEK257$$2G:(DE-HGF)$$aChemie und Dynamik der Geo-Biosphäre$$cU01$$x0 000035954 588__ $$aDataset connected to Web of Science 000035954 650_7 $$2WoSType$$aJ 000035954 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)129123$$aGünther, G.$$b1$$uFZJ 000035954 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)1462145-9$$a10.1007/s00703-004-0087-6$$gVol. 90$$q90$$tMeteorology and Atmospheric Physics$$v90$$x0177-7971$$y2005 000035954 8567_ $$uhttp://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00703-004-0087-6 000035954 909CO $$ooai:juser.fz-juelich.de:35954$$pVDB 000035954 9131_ $$0G:(DE-Juel1)FUEK257$$bEnvironment (Umwelt)$$kU01$$lChemie und Dynamik der Geo-Biosphäre$$vChemie und Dynamik der Geo-Biosphäre$$x0 000035954 9141_ $$y2005 000035954 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0010$$2StatID$$aJCR/ISI refereed 000035954 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0100$$2StatID$$aJCR 000035954 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0111$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bScience Citation Index Expanded 000035954 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0150$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bWeb of Science Core Collection 000035954 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0199$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bThomson Reuters Master Journal List 000035954 9201_ $$0I:(DE-Juel1)VDB47$$d31.12.2006$$gICG$$kICG-I$$lStratosphäre$$x0 000035954 970__ $$aVDB:(DE-Juel1)43146 000035954 980__ $$aVDB 000035954 980__ $$aConvertedRecord 000035954 980__ $$ajournal 000035954 980__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)IEK-7-20101013 000035954 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED 000035954 981__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)ICE-4-20101013 000035954 981__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)IEK-7-20101013
