AB - The main purpose of the presented work was the development of a modelling system for the distributed, physically based simulation of the water balance in large river catchments. In addition to the simulation of the hydrological processes, which are relevant in upper meso- and macro scale for runoff generation and concentration, the modelling system should contain routines for the regionalisation of climate and precipitation measurements from point sources. Moreover the calculation of the actual evapotranspiration should be based on the spatial distribution of different landuse dasses and should be integrated into the modelling system. Because the model should be applicable for the modelling of catchments with areas of more than 1000 km$^{2}$, it was designed to be driven with data sources wh ich are available on anational scale. During the model development dose attention was paid to allow the model to use higher resolution data when available. The primary goal was the most precise and physically based simulation of runoff generation and its associated processes. During the conversion of the model concept into mathematical equations care was taken that parameters, which can be derived from readily available data sources, are used as much as possible direct1y for the model calculations to attain a robust and transferable modelling system. During the development of the modelling system some basic assumptions were made, which are shown in Part I, Chapter 1. From these basic assumptions postulations were derived, which were considered obligatory during the development and the transfer of the modelling concept into an executable modelling system. During the development and the programming of the modelling system dose attention was paid to realize it in a modular design. Thereby the different hydrological processes could be simulated [...]
