Research Centre Jülich...
is an international and interdisciplinary centre of expertise with five main areas of research
- Matter,
- Energy,
- Information,
- Life,
- Environment,
which together form the "Jülich Science MEILE" (Meile = mile). These topics are also reflected in the research areas and programmes of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF), of which Research Centre Jülich is a member.
This Scientific Report contains decriptions of results of the individual research and development projects in 2003 prepared by the responsible scientists.
The Scientific Report
- informs the Supervisory Board and the Partners in near real time about the research and development activities performed by Research Centre Jülich,
- serves the Board of Directors and the Scientific and Technical Council as a basis for discussions on the Centre's future research and development programme,
- provides the Centre's scientists and the public with comprehensive information about the Centre's research and development work.
The Scientific Report thus equally serves information and coordination purposes. It is an integral part of a task-oriented evaluation of results.

Explanations
The present report follows the research and development programme for the budget year 2003. It contains the essential results of the research and development projects (R&D projects) carried out at the institutes and the scientific and technical joint facilities of the Centre.
After a short description of each main area of research, each individual R&D project is presented with the essential results of the year under review. Optionally, and if available, publication and patent lists as well as detailed results can be downloaded.
The report is complemented by brief descriptions of the institutes and units of organization performing R&D. Publication and patent lists as well as detailed results, if any, are also available here for downloading. Moreover, a link to the institute's homepage can be clicked on.
At the end of the Scientific Report some synoptic tables can be found.
