The simplest system for the investigation of this dependence is the normal movement of pedestrians along a line (single-file movement). This paper presents experimental results for this system under laboratory conditions and discusses the following observations: the data show a linear relation between the velocity and the inverse of the density, which can be regarded as the required length for one pedestrian to move. Furthermore, we compare the results for the single-file movement with literature data for the movement in a plane. This comparison shows an unexpected conformance between the fundamental diagrams, indicating that lateral interference has negligible influence on the velocity - density relation in the density domain 1 m(-2) >rho > 5 m(-2). In addition, we test a procedure for automatic recording of pedestrian flow characteristics. We present preliminary results on the measurement range and accuracy of this method. 000048274 536__ $$0G:(DE-Juel1)FUEK254$$2G:(DE-HGF)$$aBetrieb und Weiterentwicklung des Höchstleistungsrechners$$cI03$$x0 000048274 588__ $$aDataset connected to Web of Science 000048274 650_7 $$2WoSType$$aJ 000048274 65320 $$2Author$$atraffic and crowd dynamics 000048274 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)132269$$aSteffen, B.$$b1$$uFZJ 000048274 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aKlingsch, W.$$b2 000048274 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)132064$$aBoltes, M.$$b3$$uFZJ 000048274 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)2138944-5$$a10.1088/1742-5468/2005/10/P10002$$gp.
