520 _ _ |a Particularly in lowland regions, the artificial drainage of land plays an important role for runoff processes and for the non-point input of nutrients and pesticides into surface waters. However, spatially differentiated data are usually not available so that such drainage cannot find due consideration in the modelling of large river basins. For this reason, a first attempt was made in some test areas to identify drained areas by interpretation of aerial imagery. In a next step, these data provided the basis for the development of a GIS based method that allows estimating the location of potentially drained areas by a combination of different site factors. Having validated the derived drainage maps by comparison with large-scale drainage plans of the Ems river basin, the method is now being applied to a 98,000 km(2) region in North-western Germany.
