Despite the widespread use of cortical folding patterns to perform ad hoc estimations of the locations of the BAs, little is understood regarding 1) how variable the position of a given BA is with respect to the folds, 2) whether the location of some BAs is more variable than others, and 3) whether the variability is related to the level of a BA in a putative cortical hierarchy. We use whole-brain histology of 10 postmortem human brains and surface-based analysis to test how well the folds predict the locations of the BAs. We show that higher order cortical areas exhibit more variability than primary and secondary areas and that the folds are much better predictors of the BAs than had been previously thought. These results further highlight the significance of cortical folding patterns and suggest a common mechanism for the development of the folds and the cytoarchitectonic fields. 000062934 536__ $$0G:(DE-Juel1)FUEK409$$2G:(DE-HGF)$$aFunktion und Dysfunktion des Nervensystems$$cP33$$x0 000062934 588__ $$aDataset connected to Web of Science, Pubmed 000062934 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aBrain Mapping: methods 000062934 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aCerebral Cortex: cytology 000062934 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aCerebral Cortex: physiology 000062934 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aHumans 000062934 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aPredictive Value of Tests 000062934 650_7 $$2WoSType$$aJ 000062934 65320 $$2Author$$acerebral cortex 000062934 65320 $$2Author$$amacroscopic landmarks 000062934 65320 $$2Author$$amicroscopic architecture 000062934 65320 $$2Author$$amorphometry 000062934 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aRajendran, N.$$b1 000062934 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aBusa, E.$$b2 000062934 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aAugustinack, J.$$b3 000062934 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aHinds, O.$$b4 000062934 7001_ $$0P:(DE-HGF)0$$aYeo, T.$$b5 000062934 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)VDB1083$$aMohlberg, H.$$b6$$uFZJ 000062934 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)131631$$aAmunts, K.$$b7$$uFZJ 000062934 7001_ $$0P:(DE-Juel1)131714$$aZilles, K.$$b8$$uFZJ 000062934 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)1483485-6$$a10.1093/cercor/bhm225$$gVol. 18, p. 1973 - 1980$$p1973 - 1980$$q18<1973 - 1980$$tCerebral cortex$$v18$$x1047-3211$$y2008 000062934 8567_ $$2Pubmed Central$$uhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2474454 000062934 909CO $$ooai:juser.fz-juelich.de:62934$$pVDB 000062934 9131_ $$0G:(DE-Juel1)FUEK409$$bGesundheit$$kP33$$lFunktion und Dysfunktion des Nervensystems$$vFunktion und Dysfunktion des Nervensystems$$x0 000062934 9141_ $$y2008 000062934 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0010$$aJCR/ISI refereed 000062934 9201_ $$0I:(DE-Juel1)INB-3-20090406$$d31.12.2008$$gINB$$kINB-3$$lMedizin$$x0 000062934 9201_ $$0I:(DE-82)080010_20140620$$gJARA$$kJARA-BRAIN$$lJülich-Aachen Research Alliance - Translational Brain Medicine$$x1 000062934 970__ $$aVDB:(DE-Juel1)99905 000062934 980__ $$aVDB 000062934 980__ $$aConvertedRecord 000062934 980__ $$ajournal 000062934 980__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)INB-3-20090406 000062934 980__ $$aI:(DE-82)080010_20140620 000062934 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED 000062934 981__ $$aI:(DE-Juel1)VDB1046
