000824500 520__ $$aThe aim in non-destructive testing is to visualize the interior of a given three-dimensional object in order to uncover location, size, and geometry of inhomogeneities. Interior transmission eigenvalues can be used for this purpose. However, the efficient numerical calculation of interior transmission eigenvalues is a challenging task due to the fact that the corresponding interior transmission problem is neither elliptic nor self-adjoint. It is explained what interior transmission eigenvalues are, how they can be computed to high accuracy with the help of boundary integral equations (see [1-3]), and how they might be used to visualize the interior of a given three-dimensional object. Additionally, some open problems both from the theoretical and practical point of view are illustrated.
