Abstract: Parallel and orthogonal superposition experiments by Vermant et al. (1998) on a polydisperse, entangled polymeric solution are here analyzed by using a simple, multi-mode differential constitutive equation based on the tube model, and also accounting for convective constraint release effects. Model predictions are in very good qualitative and quantitative agreement with parallel superposition data, while some discrepancies are found with orthogonal data, thus suggesting that orthogonal superposition experiments represent a more severe test for molecularly-based constitutive equations.
