AB - Nowadays biological membranes are considered a flexible and dynamic matrix to separate individual cells and cell compartments and to host a multitude of molecules from phospholipids, sterols, proteins, surfactants or drugs. The main physical parameter related to the fluidity and flexibility of biological membranes is the main phase temperature where the surrounding lipid matrix is changing from a solid like gel state to a fluid like state. Individual membrane lipids exhibit very sharp phase transition temperatures which are easily modified by the addition of additives as cholesterol, surfactants, or other biological active molecules. To model biological membranes and their interaction with such molecules in a precices manner detailed knowledge on the local dynamics, clustering and phase separation in the nanometer range is of general interest. Such dynamics can be probed by neutron and muon spectroscopy. Here we will show some examples of the influence of certain additives, in particular cholesterol and medium chain alcohols, on the local dynamics of phospholipid model membrane systems and the clustering and phase separation of such added molecules within the phospholipid membrane.
