Abstract: Today's and tomorrow's biomass-based energy applications need a continuous improvement of their technological and biomass-related characteristics. In the context of the European Union’s Renewable energy directive the multicriterial evaluation of new and innovative biomass supply for thermal energy use can help to identify beneficial technologies. As part of a comprehensive evaluation a life cycle assessment (LCA) was carried out by means of a suitable cradle-to-gate system design for the use of the plant Sida hermaphrodita (a.k.a. Virginia fanpetals) as a biomass source for energy production. Sida hermaphrodita as a perennial and productive energy plant allows an energy use beyond the "food or fuel discussion" and was studied in different planting and processing scenarios. Ecological effects of different technological settings, which include the production and use paths for solid biofuels like chips, pellets and briquettes, were investigated by the LCA. Field-test and lab generated data of several years form the basis for a more realistic appraisal of possible new processes driven by the use of Sida hermaphrodita as a sustainable biomass resource. Furthermore, basic starting points for ecological optimization could be identified by the use of LCA-software GaBi ts in combination with ILCD standards. This contribution gives an overview to the process chains, their features and ecological pathways. As part of biomass evaluation it answers parts of the question if it is reasonable to use Sida heraphrodita as a serious alternative to other energy plants in future. The analysis of impact categories and relationships within the mentioned systems will be considered. The results are compared to other conventional technologies or long term tested and used biomasses.
