Present and Future of Thermal Barrier Coatings

Abstract: Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs)s are extensively used to enable enhanced efficiency in gas turbines for both energy and aviation sector. TBCs nowadays are becoming prime reliant and alongside with the electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) various thermal spray technologies are intensively used for the deposition of these advanced protective coating systems under increasingly harsh conditions in terms of thermo-cyclic loadings and corrosive environments. Current developments cover e.g. improved coating microstructures, new materials and multi-functional coating systems. Especially columnar architectures attract major interest as they offer high strain tolerance similar to EB-PVD type coatings which can be achieved e.g. by suspension plasma spraying (SPS) or plasma spray physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD). The relation between process condition and microstructure will be outlined. In addition, results of thermal cycling of such columnar structured coatings will be shown and discussed. Improved capabilities to withstand increasing temperatures and harsh corrosive environments typically are achieved by multi-layer coating designs which comprise new material top-coats or composite inter-layers. Processing issues of TBCs with top-layers from high-temperature capable materials as e.g. rare earth oxides as pyrochlores, aluminates and complex perovskites will be reviewed. Degradation modes of those advanced coating systems under relevant test conditions are reviewed giving some indication for further improvements.Finally, also some remarks on the use of TBCs on ceramic matrix composites will be given.
