520 _ _ |a Within the MOZAIC project continuous measurements of ozone and water vapour could be established in the upper troposphere for the first time. By means of this data set the mean stratospheric-tropospheric-exchange in the region of the polar jet is analyzed in a statistical way. Comparing the concentrations in the vertical cross section of the jet with climatological distributions, the vertical transport of ozone and water vapour in the jet is determined. As annual rnean the vertical turning direction within the jet stream is analyzed as well as the amount of ozone that is transported from the stratosphere into the troposphere and that influences the tropospheric ozone budget. The distributions of ozone, relative and specific humidity as well as the temperature consistently point towards an annual mean thermal direct circulation within the jet cross section. The mean vertical circulation depends mainly an the meridional temperature gradient, the stratospheric downward pumping and the seasonal variation of the tropopause height. Due to the seasonal variation of these effects the most ozone is transported downwards from the stratosphere into the troposphere in spring time. The vertical transport of ozone is lowest in autumn. A simple estimation results in a netto-downward-flux of ozone in the order of 7 $\cdot$ 10$^{11}$ molecules/cm$^{2}$/s. The good agreement of this result with complex model caleulations shows that the order of the ozone flux amount through the tropopause within the jet can be convincingly established from observational data as well as from model caleulations. Higher Exactness of the results is limited by the restricted knowledge of dynamical and chemical processes in the atmosphere.
