Weyl Semimetals: Realization of Weyl Fermions in condensed matter systems

Abstract: Discovery of Weyl semimetals was named ‘breakthrough of the year’ by Physics World magazine in 2015. Weyl semimetals occur where conduction and valance band touches at discrete values of crystal momenta in 3D non-centrosymmetric or magnetic materials where either space inversion or time reversal symmetry is broken. At present, we have elementary theoretical understanding about the nature of the Weyl semimetal (WSM) and a number of experimental signatures are being studied, that include, Fermi arc as topological surface state, and the so called ‘chiral anomaly’ manifesting itself in anomalous Hall effect or negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (MR). In this talk, I like to discuss basic and fundamental properties of Weyl semimetals as well as their manifestation in a quantum condensed matter system.
